“The design responds to the artworks presented and the character of the theme and creates a visual identity for the respective exhibition.”

Task

The Japanese German Centre Berlin (JDZB) organises quarterly exhibitions focusing on contemporary art and Japanese culture. The studio was commissioned to design the advertising material for the exhibitions for two years. On the grounds of the JDZB in Berlin-Dahlem, two large displays for outdoor banners have been installed in front of the striking architecture to draw attention to current or upcoming exhibitions. In addition, interested parties are made aware of the exhibitions by e-mail and through invitation cards on display. For each exhibition, the studio designed an accompanying leaflet with selected works and texts.
The design emphasises the works of art presented and the character of the theme and creates a visual identity for the respective exhibition. The typographic design was realised within the framework of the JDZB's corporate design guidelines.

Context

The Japanese German Centre Berlin was founded in 1985 on the initiative of the then German Chancellor Dr Helmut Kohl and the Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone. As a non-profit foundation, the Centre is dedicated to promoting German Japanese and international cooperation in science and culture. The exhibitions often present the works of two artists, one from Germany and the other from Japan. The focus is on intercultural dialogue. The exhibitions also focus on the presentation of traditional Japanese art, handicrafts and design. The exhibition openings are conceived as evening-long events, with other events taking place during the vernissage. These may include performances of contemporary music, a traditional tea ceremony or themed lectures.
